Speak Your Mind: Harry Potter v. Luke Skywalker

If you’re a regular Teen Skepchick reader, it’s at least possible that you’re a least low-level sci-fi fan. I know I am. I also know that not all sci-fi/fantasy is created equal. Apparently, Daniel Radcliffe feels the same way. He said Harry Potter fandom is somehow better than Star Trek and Star Wars fandom because Harry Potter has literary roots.

Bah, I say! While encouraging kids to read is an admirable goal, I can’t bring myself to say that Harry Potter is better than Star Wars (at least the original trilogy). And The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy originated as a radio show. Is Daniel trying to tell me that Harry Potter is better than H2G2? Puh-leez.

What do you think? Do you prefer to consume your SF/F through movies or books, or does it matter? Do you think one medium is better than the other? What are your favorite SF/F series? Do you think it’s weird that the linked video ends with an advertisement for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2?

Books are better than movies. They are more flexible, contain more information, increase literacy, cost less to produce, enrich fewer morons, are entertaining for longer for a lower price.

That said movies are great too.

My current favourite is Patrick Rothfuss’ Kingkiller Chronicle. If the final volume (or volumes) lives up to the first two it’ll be the best epic fantasy ever. Just reading the teaser brings me close to nerdgasm:

I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.

You may have heard of me.

And it would have been nice if I’d managed to get the quoted part in italics.

    HP IS better,no evidence though,(yet).
My brother had a mild obsesion with star wars and i would sit with him and try to get it and never did. I avoided it later. Right now im in the sprawl trilogy, cant wait for the movie. I would say i perfer books, but only because im more time in the story instead of just an hour or 2.
