Speak Your Mind

Speak Your Mind: Nym Wars

The Internet is great for a lot of things. (I’m submitting that for the “Most Obvious Statement of the Year” award.) A world of information is at your fingertips, and one can become part of a robust community of people from around the world. But it can also be a dangerous and scary place and people can get into trouble by speaking out on the Internet. This is where pseudonyms can come in handy.

This type of anonymity can sometimes be a little dehumanizing, but it also allows people to speak freely without fear of losing a job or, in extreme cases, going to prison. Using a nym can help separate one’s real life and online existence in beneficial ways. Sometimes I wish I had had the presence of mind to use a nym when I first started using the internet, but those were the heady days of the 1990s. Kind of like the 1960s, except without the drugs or human contact. ANYHOO.

Do you use a pseudonym? Why do you use them? Why don’t you use them? Are they helpful in real life? If you could start over, would you use one?
