Speak Your Mind: Olympic Fever
I gotta fever. Olympic fever. I love this stuff. I can’t help it. I have no idea what’s going on in cycling, but dang it, these people are peddling their hearts out! I respect that. Ditto for basically all the other sports. I have no concept of what it must be like to fly between the uneven bars, but that’s what makes it kind of amazing.
If you’re watching in the United States, there has already been a little controversy regarding NBC’s editing of the Opening Ceremony to exclude the tribute to those killed in the 7/7 terrorist attacks. Evidently, we Americans are too delicate/stupid to appreciate a good tribute. Sure it’s insulting – to both Americans and 7/7 victims and survivors – but I’m having a hard time letting it dampen my enthusiasm. For many of the athletes competing (at least the amateur athletes), this is the pinnacle of everything they’ve been working for their entire lives. And we get to watch it. Every elated victory and every crushing defeat. It’s so incredibly personal; I feel like I’m spying. But I can’t look away.
Are you watching the Summer Olympics? What are your favorite events? Do you get inappropriately patriotic? Are you as upset as I am that NBC cut out the 7/7 tribute in the Opening Ceremony? Does the Olympics have a gay agenda? (Look at those rainbow colored rings!) Or do you not care a lick about this sporting event?
