Suspension of Disbelief

Suspension of Disbelief: The Watch

My favorite 6″5′ actor, good laughs and aliens. The Watch follows 4 suburban guys who form a neighbourhood watch group to catch the Costco killer only to find out… it may not be human! Dun dun dun…

Title: The Watch
Director: Akiva Schaffer
Actors: Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill

So in this movie Ben Stiller plays a super community oriented guy trying to get his wife pregnant. He runs many groups in the town, is very friendly with everyone and has that adorable gigantic Ben Stiller smile. He is also a manager at Costco and after a tragedy strikes he calls for a task force to hunt down the Costco Killer. The men he recruits all end up being a bit odd… Vince Vaughn likes to drink and party, Johna Hill seems to have a little too much internal anger and Richard Ayoade is a slightly odd Brit. His neighbour is a bit weird and harbours quite an interesting secret. Actually… most people seem to have a secret.

I have to say – I generally love movies like this… Dodgeball, Zoolander… etc. Those sorts of movies that have an odd premise and then just take it to fun ridiculous levels. This movie was not as funny as those movies…

Pros

Even though its not AS funny as Dodgeball or Zoolander it is still pretty funny. I had a good couple of laughs… but nothing that made me tear up or hold my sides.

The movie doesn’t dance around the fact that there are aliens. They show the aliens all the time, they don’t hide it at all… I don’t like it when alien movies don’t show the alien, or only show glimpses of it to keep the audience guessing what it really looks like… I’d rather just see it. These aliens look scary and big, eat humans and can speak English… pretty awesome.

A Costco blows up.

Cons

As much as I love Vince Vaughn he really does only play one character. That sort of party guy with spastic funny lines who calls everyone with his own cute little nickname.

Remember Anchor Man… when they did the weather channel fight in the alley with Ben Stiller? Or in Zoolander when they do the walk-off with Billy Zane? Or in Wedding Crashers when Will Farrell made his surprise appearance? So. Many. Cameos. I kept waiting for there to be some hilarious cameos… these make me laugh! I wanted Will Farrell to be like the lead alien or someone in Costco shopping – anything!! I just think those really make the movie fun. Actually… lets watch one of those…

I mean come on – that’s hilarious. Not only is it funny to see all those actors show up but just the little jokes inside of it… There is NOTHING like this in The Watch.

There’s a lot of sex jokes, and I don’t find them very funny. Penis and humping jokes just don’t make me laugh, they are really the lowest form of humour. …And this movie was full of it.

This is definitely not going to win any Oscars in any category… The acting was not good, the script was not good, the story was not good, the music was not good… etc etc etc. It was a good time because I went with my sister who laughs at anything… There are a LOT better movies in the theater right now (I also just saw The Campaign… it was much funnier, so see it instead).

If you’re looking for a good sci-fi, don’t look here… but I doubt that’s very surprising. They don’t even bother trying to explain why the aliens are killing the humans, where they came from, how they got there or why their weapons require so many fingers inside the holes to make it work. They don’t explain why they can look like humans, eat humans or speak English. There is nothing logical about it. The aliens are simply there, and you just have to deal with it. Your disbelief has to be severely suspended for this one, but if you let the details slide then you’ll have a good laugh or two.

I give this movie a 2 out of 5 adorable Vince Vaughn faces.

This makes me so sad! It has Richard Ayoade! Sigh. Oh well.
