Its important to emphasis that a disability is not a static thing, you still grow old, you still learn, you mature, you cope all in varying degrees, just like the rest of us.

Just got back from the flicks – Worth every cent, I loved it. Powerful acting and great characters. It gets the major technical points right without taking too many liberties. But where it shines is with the acting, and social message. Hard to talk about it with out spoilers, go see it you won’t be disappointed.

Mary, the Bletchley Park podcast interviewed Benedict Cumberbatch and the director, prior to the release of this movie, it gives some interesting insights, like that they brought the entire cast to Bletchley, to get a feel for the history, and they did a small amount of filming at Bletchley. Benedict seemed very enthused about playing the role of…[Read more]

I have been listening to the SGU before you joined, and IMO it benefited immensely with your participation. You brought a different perspective, outrageous humour, and wit. I also had the pleasure of meeting you briefly in person at the Sydney Amazing meeting 5 years ago.
Those same issues that has turned you towards feminism is why I read and…[Read more]

re – “its not about you” While I agree that women don’t exclusively dress for men, the notion that ‘you dress for yourself’ seems to me to be a bit untestable. How can one be objective in a society that ‘teaches’ women to dress from cradle to grave?

Re – (He believes drug users deserve to die from their addictions) Ok that should read “he once believed….” (presumption statement is true).

But as a general point, is there some ‘Social Statute of Limitations’ whereby our previous ideologies are no longer held against us? Seriously, I would bet everyone has some skeleton in the closet.

My Son has a few triggers, but I didn’t know about the “discussion of dieting” being one.

    • It depends on your mental illness. And remember, PTSD works because human memory is highly associative. If only it were so simple as discussing rape being the only thing that reminds a survivor of rape. But if the room had sky blue curtains or smelled of rosewater or a particular song was playing downstairs, those things can also bring back the…[Read more]

I like your 3 points of advise.

Regarding famous people – do you think there is any validity in the Oscar Wilde quote of “The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about.” i.e. that some (not all obviously) are ‘playing the media’.

I remember my history teacher (in Australia) telling us that the native Indians were ‘defeated’ in large part due to the overhunting of the Bison by the europeans to near extinction. The Bison being the primary food and clothing source for the Indians. I’m not sure if this is a reliable historical ‘fact’.

    • Not all indigenous Americans lived on the great plains so even if that were true (and I highly doubt it is, at least fully) it wouldn’t be true for the indigenous peoples in other areas of America (including all of South America BTW).

It was far more complex then your standard history class is willing to get into so they come up with just-so…[Read more]

    • I have heard a version of this idea in which American colonists on the Great Plains were explicitly encouraged to overhunt bison in order to deprive the Plains Indians of their major food resource. I don’t know if it’s true; one thing that makes me doubt it is that the dominant belief in 19th century America seems to have been that natural…[Read more]

It became extinct in 1907 after extensive hunting for collections and its tail feathers, which were in great demand due to an international fashion of wearing them in hats. Interesting article on Hollywood, at first I thought the article was going to be about people in the business but its more about representation on screen. I am wondering if women in the movie business are actualy fighting on two fronts, genuine sexism and the business model i.e. ‘the movie narrative that makes money’.

re leaving engineering – other than the ‘old boy attitude’ the examples of leaving are more or less the same for men that leave engineering. Especially the lack of promotion prospects, the engineering world is a very flat workforce structure, you basically got ‘team leader’ then a huge leap into management.

re men interrupting women: I have noticed this on a few podcasts I regularly listen to also. The strange thing is that I don’t think the men nor the women was conscious of it. What seemed to be happening was that the men would interrupt so as if to be included in the conversation, it seemed like subconscious level of flirtation.
