I’m so glad I live in a culture where this isn’t an issue. Young kids know Santa is real, because he comes in person to give out a few presents. Bigger kids know Santa is actually their uncle, because they recognise the boots, and figure out that it’s too much of a coincidence that he’s just happened to have been in the bathroom the exact time…[Read more]

My favourite part is “My will have to involve the FBI and the local CIA on this”. The local CIA, really, that’s what you’re going with? 😀

    • Wait, the CIA is a law enforcement agency? When did that happen?

      • My wife received a call from someone claiming to be with the CIA telling her she would be arrested the next day because of a warrant for her arrest in the Dominican Republic. She was supposed to stand by and talk to a judge who would arrange bail. She told them to come arrest her.

I called the number back from work and after chatting, hung…[Read more]

Wasn’t there _something_ about red blood cells and DNA though?

    *traces claim*

Oh, right you illustrated something about DNA-testing with an image containing red blood cells once. That totally means you shouldn’t be allowed to do this show that’s way too far away from me. In fact I think the US should fly its “perfect scientific accuracy…[Read more]

    • I could worry about checking that the red blood cells pictured were mammalian (or a very few salamander or fish species) as other vertebrate red blood cells do indeed contain DNA, and that there were no white blood cells (also containing DNA) in the sample from which the picture was taken, but as this comes from GamerGate, I feel absolutely sure…[Read more]

I only made one attempt. But lazy as I was I tried aiming at the same spot I’d placed my own ship, so a good human counterpart could probably have beaten me on that move.

Generic mockery is pleasurable and funny, but as you say, potentially damaging. I think one should be allowed to indulge occasionally, but if it becomes the rule rather than an exception, it goes from “obvious joke, not an attempt to argue” to “that’s all you’ve got, inaccurate mockery”.

I think it’s important to also note how this ties in with…[Read more]

Forgot to mention? You mean this part doesn’t count as a mention of that problem: “My first act as CEO was to completely overhaul our brand and advertising—dropping the commercials that women clearly articulated to be objectifying and over-sexualized”?

I too am having trouble seeing where this counts as mansplaining and would value the insight.

I think bar charts is the way to go, but the bars should be measuring cylinders.

My immediate emotional response is that perpetuating the existence of a culture by demanding hardships of the individuals in that culture isn’t the obvious no-no you make it out to be. And of course now I’m trying to rationalize this stance, which is uncomfortably hard.

One thing I’m wondering though, unless we put an inherent value on adding…[Read more]

The The Verge story about the redditor behind “The Fappening” is fairly weak gruel. Nowhere in the cited stuff does the guy say “I want my privacy back” or anything even similar. He’s just complained, after being asked, about the angle of the WP article, which doesn’t identify him, by the way, and for some reason compares himself to Richard…[Read more]

  • I know who Miley Cyrus is. I’ve seen a lot of episodes of Hannah Montana, cause I’m a simple person who enjoy the simple humour of Disney Channel shows. I didn’t watch the VMA, or the clips, because the VMA has […]
