I agree with Bill Nye that science should be bipartisan, and I agree with Rebecca that it isn’t that way presently. I’m not convinced his actions here will do any good, but I understand what he’s trying to do, and whether he’s successful or not (I’m guessing not, at least not right now), his attempt doesn’t need to be attacked by anyone. Maybe…[Read more]

The article on Nerd/Male privilege was very thought-provoking for me. I have grown up a white male in a first world country. I spent the majority of my time growing up feeling afraid and victimized and thinking that things couldn’t be worse.

It’s strange how age and exposure to the plights of others broadens our perspective. Consider how…[Read more]

I know this has nothing to do with gamergate (I must admit that I wish gamergate would just go away), but the most thought provoking thought of the entire interview comes right at the end, “The power to say yes is the only real power, but almost no one has that power. Almost everyone has the power to say no, and the problem is…because it’s the…[Read more]

The CDC are such liars! The cyborgs are merely “converting” people! That’s way different than death (and I assure you, much, much worse than death.)

The one thing that made me wince with Jennifer Lawrence’s comments was the statement, “I can’t believe we live in that kind of world.”

Wouldn’t it be nice to live in a world where when we delete a photo that we own, our service provider didn’t secretly keep a copy of that photo in the cloud (“backup”), and hide behind a “user agreement” to…[Read more]

    • It would be nice, but that isn’t the world we live in. It hasn’t been for some time, privacy isn’t dying, it’s dead.

Yeah, but we don’t just have to accept that that’s how things are. That this is the world we live in isn’t an unavoidable fact, it’s a consequence of a whole series of choices that we, collectively, have made. And we could c…[Read more]

    Re: “Gay Wizards”

Been playing since 1980 and I’ve never specified sexual orientation for a single character…those kind of interactions tend not to be part of the game.

The best point here is made early in the video.

If this #gamergate was actually about ethics in journalism, why go after the game developer and not go after the critics that allegedly showed poor ethics?

If you are going to come up for an excuse for your bad behavior, at least come up with a passable excuse.

    1) Why would anyone follow Ken Jennings on Twitter? Has he done anything noteworthy other than memorizing trivia?

    2) Libertarians suing each other = sweet irony!

    3) Once again “religious liberty” trumps “individual liberty” shame!

    4) I understand the point that “single sex studies” reduce variables in a study, but if gender bias wasn’t a…[Read more]

A “Sin” by definition transgresses a supposed “divine law”, so mrmisconception is spot on with his point IMO.

    • sevlevboss,

That’s one definition. But like I said earlier, people have used the term ( even people who don’t believe in a any god ) to simply mean an action that is immoral.

I think the FWP meme can actually be quite humorous, but only when used in fun. When my wife points out that the stir stick doesn’t reach the bottom of her extra large coffee cup and points out it’s a “first world problem” we share a laugh.

When you start to take apart someone’s concern over a real problem because there are “bigger problems”…[Read more]

That Gamergate article in Cracked seemed to highlight something I’ve noticed recently. The internet seems to be an ideal place for mob-mentality. People just lose their shit over things that have absolutely nothing to do with them, then move on to lose their shit over the next thing that they come across. It’s like all rational thought just…[Read more]

    • This isn’t people losing their minds or “mob mentality”. Didn’t you read the article?

This is an intentional campaign of harassment. These people do not want the status quo to change. They don’t like women and don’t want them participating in this industry. It’s kind of like racism in that nobody actually admits that’s what they believe but…[Read more]

Agreed, the Kock (sorry…Koch) brothers are friggin’ saints compared to the “parents” of that poor woman. I only hope that their lives were miserable and they ended up killing each other.

I have absolutely no problem with the “forced apology”, I also have no problem with a “forced apology acceptance”.

Good manners are taught, and (especially when you are a child and not used to concerning yourself with the feelings of others) are often going to be insincere when spoken by a child.

Learning when to say you are sorry and…[Read more]

The Koch brothers buy our government, but apparently that’s not enough, they need to buy our education system too. I wonder how many other schools are having their curriculum bought like a commodity?

    • Sevlevboss,

I would hope not too many. Someone ought to get in big trouble for this. Basically bribing a university to promote your ideology at the expense of everything else is not acceptable. The people in charge of Florida State University ought to be ashamed of themselves. Ideally collage professors, like scientists should reach their…[Read more]
