Well, your genuine concern comes across as concern trolling. It’s a non-issue, so please drop it.

As clearly stated in the post, this is not a job. It’s a volunteer gig at a queer-oriented blog. If someone wants to come after me for asking people who apply to write for a queer blog to be queer, they can come after me.

But thanks for your faux concern.

    • Dude, I totally understand WHY you want them to be. I’m just not sure it’s actually legal.

I know I’m a recent registration, so could be anyone on the internet, but my concern is genuine.

Update 2/6/2015: We’ve had an amazing amount of interest in writing for Queereka! I have decided to close down our call for writers for now. If you were not selected this time around, please keep an eye on […]

    • Whoa, whoa. Depending on where you’re located, including a requirement of a sexual orientation in a job posting could be illegal.

I’m not sure if there are exceptions for volunteer roles either. Did you run this by a lawyer?

The author is talking about general trends in aggregate data, and you find 2 cases that don’t fit the trend. That doesn’t mean the trend is incorrect, it means you found outliers.

I also love the hypocrisy of #1. “Suppressing opposing views is the worst! That’s not how society should work! Let me sign this petition to suppress the views of someone I oppose by cancelling their work!”

No, you’re “labouring under a misapprehension,” which is that just because 90% of people working in linguistics are men that they are somehow “the most gifted linguists.” The point kagehi is making that you seem loathe to acknowledge is that there are structural barriers in place that set up these differences, and in many cases exaggerate these…[Read more]

    • You should probably reread my last message. I don’t claim that there are not “structural barriers” that create and/or exaggerate gender imbalances; I specifically allow that such an explanation for the existence of gender imbalances may be correct. My point is simply that kagehi’s inference is incorrect. In particular, I show that it is possible…[Read more]

    • Seems to be a semantic argument here, is this better Hardy – there is no automatic reason to assume that such a bias is real, other than its prevalence in academia, but there is vast amounts of evidence implying a likely alternative explanation, which is sufficiently pervasive across all disciplines and skills, to suggest that its **unlikely** to…[Read more]

    Fucking. Brilliant.

Jamie, I love this. When you explained this in person at SkepchickCON, something clicked and I finally understood Bayes’ Theorem. I’m so glad you were able to make it into a post. Wonderful job.

    • I’m glad you kept bugging me about it. This was originally a 3-post series on statistical significance but I had so much trouble with it and it went through 2 complete rewrites before I decided to just strip it of all but the Bayes stuff. Explaining math concepts in writing is so much more difficult than explaining it to someone in person.

  • By now, most of you will have already seen the viral video “How not to react when your child tells you that he’s gay.” The young man is 20 year old Daniel Pierce of Kennesaw, GA. In the video, Daniel’s family […]

Just what advertisers put up. If you see problematic adverts, send a note on the contact form with specific information about what the ad was or send a screenshot to one of us on social media and it will make its way to Rebecca to look into. 😉

I would again recommend the article I linked because it specifically addresses how both bipedality and encephalization in humans are biocultural, not simply biological traits. I’m not going to re-hash Marks’ arguments–I linked to them so I don’t have to.

But we know that at some point after the moment when our ancestors diverged from those of…

Hahaha, I’ve been told similar things, as the lowly cultural anthropologist. It is quite irritating, but also if that’s the best they can do to try to dismiss critiques about their work, it makes me think I’m doing something right.

You are conveniently ignoring the part where they believe they are getting at paternal investment by looking at discourses about the morality of promiscuity. How in the heck do you think it’s appropriate to use that and simultaneously argue that people’s beliefs are irrelevant?

It remains the case that paternal investment in offspring could…

    • How could human paternal investment predate human culture, if one of the traits of being human is culture?

Here’s an analogous question: “How could human bipedality predate the enlargement of the human brain, given that one of the traits of being human is the enlarged brain?” Yet we know for a fact, from abundant fossil evidence, that it did.…[Read more]
