Positive Thinking On The Daily Show
The Daily Show’s guest for Wednesday, October 14, 2009 was Barbara Ehrenreich, who was on to discuss her latest book, Bright-Sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America. She talks about how many people in America perceive successes or failures due to positive or negative thinking, respectively.
The idea that you can control the world with your thoughts, that you can attract things like money to you. And, of course, the flip side of that is if you’re not doing well, if you’re sick, if you’re poor, if you’ve lost your job, it must be because you sent out the wrong vibrations to the universe.
Think The Secret.
Jon and Ms. Ehrenreich—I watch Jon Stewart four times every week, so I like to think that I deserve to be on a first-name basis—end up discussing people who tell cancer patients to “embrace [their] disease,” and how there’s no science behind positive thinking boosting your immune system. In a few lines, they liken the movement to recovering from alcoholism through religion. Awesome sauce!
Because Comedy Central is a mean, mean company that provides terrible embed codes that rarely, if ever, work, here’s the link to the interview.
