Speak Your Mind: Barney- Creationist Propaganda?

There was a post on Sociological Images last week about Creationists making “Educational” toys.

It’s a pretty interesting read, although they seem to claim that any sort of media that depicts humans alongside dinosaurs is supporting the creationist cause. Namely, the Flinstones, and Barney the Dinosaur.

I can see where they are coming from, and for parents wishing to raise their children to be creationists it is certainly handy. But really? Barney was a favourite playmate of my younger sister, and last I heard she wasn’t a Young Earth Creationist. I think at some stage I thought that cavemen and dinosaurs lived alongside one another, but I eventually got things straight around the time I figured out that the world wasn’t actually black and white when my grandparents were young. Figuring out timescales can be pretty tough for kids. And to be honest, the science unit I did on Dinosaurs at my Catholic Primary School probably did much to help me away from the notion of humans riding around on the back of dinosaurs.

What do you think? Harmless fun with fun dinosaur characters? Ironed out in the wash with other childhood misunderstandings? Or creating confusion to help Creationists?
