Where’s the First Place You Go?
Yesterday the posts linked to The Guardian a lot – and it got me thinking “wow, these smart cookies read the Guardian everyday!” and I only read it when something else that I read links to it. I get their environment feed on my feedly but I have 4 or 5 other environment sites I usually read before getting to it. It made me wonder – what are sites that people check …like *everyday*??? I’m looking for new sites to add to my “must read in the morning” list, what are some of your favorites? I’ve listed my top 5 after the jump (and after seeing them some of you might think – “why didn’t you ask us for help sooner?!” 🙂 ).
I refuse to be embarrassed by what I read! Also, I sort of justify it by saying “well I do work on social justice, power issues and the environment ALL DAY… I sort of want a break once in a while”. But really – I should justify it by saying “If you like kittens and baking and pretty things and makeup all the power to you, lovely!” xo
1. Hello Giggles – This site was co-founded by Zooey Deschanel and two of her friends. The site has a ton of stuff from baking recipes, commentaries on dating, geek culture, cute pictures, funny pictures, beauty tips, fashion posts, crafts… I could go on and on and on. I like reading it in the morning because it makes me smile. I like baby ducks and making cupcakes and wearing flowery dresses and Sex and the City. But I also like to read about girl gamers and video games in general. And TBH – Zooey’s show “New Girl” sort of informs my entire philosophy of life. I want to be Jess.
2. Jezebel – I used to be ashamed that I love Jezebel so much, but really I think they have a good stream of articles about body issues (like one from today, don’t get me wrong – I realize this isn’t a manifesto for body image but it’s still nice to read), dating topics, international issues, sex … etc. And they deliver the stories in fun ways (that are usually short, but always have links for more info).
3. Treehugger – They definitely have the best flow of environmental news from tech, fashion, news in general, social commentaries, environmental organizations… etc. They post so so so much every single day that whenever I pop by there are a few new things to take a peak at. I think its the best site to use to stay over-all informed about the environment.
4. Cuteable – The title says it all – they post pictures of cute stuff, constantly. And talk about cute things – like how to crochet a cute sweater, make cute valentines, decorate cupcakes all cute like, adorable things to buy from etsy, party theme ideas… etc. I’m a home DIY’er so this is a great place to get inspired.
But don’t worry – I finish the day off playing Skyrim and listening to Radio Lab – so hopefully I don’t lose all my geek cred. So let me know what you read! I’m interested (and need to find new inspiration for posts and things to talk about)!!!
