Speak Your Mind

Speak Your Mind: Funny Ladies

Last weekend I test drove a new car. Like, a new car. I've always bought used before, so this was pretty exciting. One of my favorite features is the satellite radio. As I was flipping through, I noticed a show called "Women in Comedy." I always like to see comediennes highlighted because women face a unique set of challenges in the industry. (See last week's guest post on women in television.) In fact, the late Christopher Hitchens famously argued that women aren't funny.

This is silly talk. In the age of Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, and others, it's hard to say that women aren't funny and hold a straight face. There are a bunch of funny ladies to choose from, and they deserve our love.

Who are your favorite women in comedy? What do you like about them? How did you discover them? Do you know of any good skeptical comedians who are women?

I believe this is relevant. I think she is pretty skeptical, too 🙂
I'm way out of date with comedians, but there are lots and lots of British women comedians that I love (besides Josie Long!). Tamsin Greig, Dawn French, Miranda Hart and Ronnie Ancona off the top of my head.
