Speak Your Mind: Gateway Science

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with space. I made cardboard cutouts of every American manned spacecraft. Yeah…I was a pretty cool kid.

Astronomy was the first science that I got into in a big way. It’s easy to see why. Space is vast and beautiful and unbelievable. It’s better than any story anyone could ever tell, and it’s real. It exposes anyone who learns about it to universe that is bigger and badder than the limited world immediately at our disposal.

Astronomy was, in short, my gateway science.

How could it not be? You don’t need to know anything about physics or geology to appreciate the beauty of a planetary nebula. Looking at the stars is almost an emotional experience that anyone, regardless of education can understand. Or maybe it’s just me.

What got you interested in science and scientific pursuits? What planted the wonder and need-to-know in your brain?
