Speak Your Mind: Obligatory Thanksgiving Post
I’m a little ashamed to admit it, but Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I don’t like that it’s my favorite holiday. I know that it has a lot of problematic aspects to it since it’s basically celebrating the genocide of many native people of North America. When I think about it I’m actually really angry that this holiday even exists. But I love it anyway.
For me Thanksgiving really has nothing to do with pilgrims or Native Americans or even giving thanks for anything. It’s also not about the beginning of the Christmas season (which starts after Halloween now, anyway.) It has more to do with how autumn makes me feel, with the crunchy leaves and cool, brisk air. Since Thanksgiving decorations have always included colorful leaves and pumpkin or spiced-apple scented candles, I have conflated the two. Not to mention that Thanksgiving is basically one of two times during the year I get to eat stuffing and my grandma’s corn casserole. Mmmm…
What, if anything, do you like about Thanksgiving? Are you traveling? Waiting in line for Black Friday sales? Do you think I’m a horrible person for loving Thanksgiving so much?
