Speak Your Mind: Sochi or Bust

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably know that the 2014 Winter Olympics began last week in Sochi, Russia. In the run-up to the Games, there was quite a bit of news from journalists who tweeted their experiences with unfinished hotels and unnerving pictures of Putin. But, despite a little hiccup with the fifth Olympic ring during the opening ceremony, things seem to be going OK. At least from the view of an outsider looking in.

I really like the Winter Olympics. I know that most people like it’s summer sibling more, but what can I say? I’m a cold weather person. I can’t ski or ice skate, but I think it’s thrilling to watch some of the top athletes in the world fly down a hill or glide gracefully over the finish line. It’s easy to get overly sentimental, but these people have devoted their lives to their sport, and for most of them this is the biggest stage of them all. It’s hard not to get taken in by that.

Do you enjoy watching the Winter Olympics? Have you been watching it this year? What is your favorite event? Or have you been boycotting because of Russia’s appalling human rights abuses?
