Yeah, it’s something I just don’t get. Has Rush Limbaugh had that much influence in reshaping the perception of the word feminism? I had a female friend in grad school working on here PhD. She was smart, tough, and outperformed most of the guys (maybe all?) in the department. One day she told me she hated feminism and I think I actually sputtered…[Read more]

    • I don’t think you can really blame people like Rush Limbaugh for this. Fact of it is that there are many ‘feminists’ screaming that all heterosexual sex is rape, that trans women aren’t ‘real’ women, that women who freely choose to be stay at home mothers are slaves who can’t see the shackles, and many other deplorable things. It isn’t like…[Read more]

      • Maybe “many” in terms of absolute numbers, like “more than a hundred”–but radical feminists are a small proportion of the total.

      • It’s particularly easy to see why people are offended by feminism when other people keep repeating the same lies and myths about feminism like:

“…there are many ‘feminists’ screaming that all heterosexual sex is rape, that trans women aren’t ‘real’ women, that women who freely choose to be stay at home mothers are slaves who can’t see the sha…[Read more]

    • This long predates Rush Limbaugh; he’s a follower. In fact the attempt to redefine feminism as man-hating (and ugly, etc.) began at least as far back as suffragettes began to agitate for women being able to vote. It was the theme of an article I saw in an old magazine (I believe it was The Atlantic from the twenties or thirties) titled “The…[Read more]

I had to come over here just to leave another supportive message. I wanted to leave one in the SGU Facebook thread linking to this announcement, but it was such a toxic swamp of men proving you right that I just upvoted a bunch of the supportive posts and then moved on.

I’ll miss you on the show very much. Your voice was needed and your humor…[Read more]

The ongoing discrimination in housing is one of my favorite (least favorite?) examples. It demonstrates that racism is not only still a thing, but a serious problem that is limiting the opportunities of minorities and perpetuating cycles of ghettoization. Here’s a recent version of a HUD study, but fair housing advocates basically conduct…[Read more]

Looks like the video was taken down from YouTube. If you search for it, you can find some brief clips. It looks like a guy having a seizure in the clip I saw, so I hope that’s not the case and he’s just faking.

    • I’m not a neurologist, and I don’t know if a neurologist could diagnose a seizure from a somewhat obstructed film clip, but I doubt it since lots of other people in the video are doing the same thing. I also don’t think it’s faking, at least not in the sense that the people flailing about and convulsing on the ground are consciously acting a…[Read more]

      • Even if you were a neurologist, it’s unethical to dx without seeing the patient in person, mostly because a video can’t give you every detail you see in person. *glares at Senator Frist*

As a cisman, the main thing for me to do on this subject is listen, so I’m happy to hear from women, transmen, or anyone else who has a different perspective from me on this, but it seems to me that sexism could be pretty much any discrimination against anyone other than a cis male?

And then it seems to me that most people who are sexist and…[Read more]

No feminists spoke up? I guess NOW aren’t feminists? It really only took a simple Google search to turn up this and many others like it: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/03/27/960371/-Why-we-must-defend-Sarah-Palin

Yes, Maher was wrong. Yes, there were far too many on the left willing to defend him, just like in the case of the misogynist…[Read more]

Whatever happened to the movement to use “crotch” as a general purpose insult? http://skepchick.org/2011/10/ai-dirty-words/

I would rather spend the rest of my life locked in a room with Vani Hari, Jenny McCarthy, Sarah Palin, Ann Coulter, and Sylvia Browne than be associated with the people making those kinds of comments. Please, folks, if you can’t give up the gendered insults, comments on women’s appearance, and rape and other violent threats, then could you at…[Read more]

    • Exactly, and while your at it stop calling people stupid just because they disagree with you, it makes you look unskeptical.

    • You do realize that at least one of those people allows such comments to remain on her pages and site when they are directed to her opponents and bans everyone politely pointing that out? Which, in my opinion, encourages such comments. I have yet to see an outcry and banning of Vani supports by Vani and her supporters. If both sides would combat…[Read more]

Yeah, this is kind of a problem. It’s true that this model is still very skinny and still not someone the average woman probably relates to and that’s well worth pointing out. The whole argument that this shouldn’t be called “plus sized” is entirely reasonable. But that also doesn’t remotely mean she’s lying when she says she’s a size ten.

    It…[Read more]
